Personal Protective Equipment Lab (PPE)

Equipment Familiarization will begin by discussing the different styles of ballistic vests. As all PPE is not created equal, we will discuss the capabilities and limitations of soft versus hard plate carriers and/or modular vests. Ineffective vest types and the ways in which they are worn have the potential of increasing exertion while reducing their effectiveness.  Continued use of ineffective body armor limits physical capabilities while increasing risk of injury.  By providing the user fundamentals of equipment selection, capabilities and limitations, and stressing the importance of fit and maintenance, they will be encouraged to wear and train in personal protective equipment. This will enable sustained use and wear during the various stages of mission training, preparation and completion, while maximizing its effectiveness. Increasing PPE use will have direct positive impact on overall success, physical well-being and conditioning.

This period of instruction will consist of an overview of gear capabilities, plates, vest, eye protection, gloves, footwear to include:

  • Levels of protection DOJ 3A through 4

  • Sizing and wear of plates vest and accessories

  • How to set up the equipment modular lightweight load-carrying equipment (MOLLE) and      pouch attachment latter system (PALS)

  • Eye protection types and capabilities

  • Glove and footwear selection and considerations

  • Practical Setup of useful Equipment where to place individual items to include standardization and placement of sustainment pouches, medical gear and accessory items useful to mission success

  • Gear considerations heat or cold related

  • Proper cleaning and care of ballistic equipment
